Dancing is Fun and Good Exercise
Not only is dancing a great deal
of fun but it is a great way to get a workout.
Any Dancesport competitor will tell you that dancing is as
athletic an activity as more “traditional” sports.
It takes training and discipline and practice to be the best
you can be.
Is it a fitness sport? Can the
social dancer or occasional competitor consider dancing as part of
their fitness program? Absolutely! Your heart as well as every
muscle in your body can get just as good a workout as during
running, bicycling, or aerobics class. That is, if you do it
continuously for 20-30 minutes just like those other activities.
That is the key, to keep moving for at least 20 minutes in order to
keep your heart rate in the target zone. Continuous 10 minute
segments works also.
Depending on how energetically you
dance you can burn up to 400 calories an hour (133 calories per 20
minute stint). Slow
dancing has the benefit of working your muscles and relieving stress
but you won’t get the aerobic benefit.
As with any form of exercise you
need to stretch before and after to reduce the risk of injury. You
should drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
Wear comfortable well fitting shoes so that your feet will
serve you well for many years of joyful dancing.
And remember to use
your folding shoe brush
to keep those shoes in top
condition.
